MTD for ITSA
Making Tax Digital for Income Tax Self-Assessment
What is it?
Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax, also known as MTD for Income Tax Self-Assessment (MTD for ITSA), will change the way millions of business owners and landlords report their earnings to HMRC. If you are wondering how this might affect you, here is a simple guide to the new rules.
What is changing under MTD for Income Tax?
The most significant change under the MTD for Income Tax rules is that instead of sending a Self-Assessment tax return to HMRC once a year, those affected will have to submit four quarterly updates about their business income and expenses. At the end of the tax year, they will also have to send an end of period statement (EOPS) and a final declaration.
Who will MTD for Income Tax affect?
Initially, MTD for Income Tax will affect self-employed business owners and landlords with a total business and/or property income above £10,000 per year. These individuals will have to follow MTD for Income Tax rules from 6th April 2024.

What will I have to do under the new rules?
Essentially you need to:
- Keep records of your business income and expenses in a digital format.
- For each type of revenue (self-employed business or property), send quarterly updates of your business income and expenses to HMRC.
- Finalise your business income by submitting an end of period statement (EOPS) for each source of income along with a final declaration.
How do I sign up for MTD for ITSA?
We can help you sign up and meet your obligations under the scheme. We will on-board you to a digital platform, at very competitive rates.
How we help you…
These are big changes to how Self-Assessment operates and how you report it. We are here to help you every step of the way, but ultimately to save you both time and money on the switch over to digital record keeping.
Speak to us today to see how we can help you, get you on-boarded and get you flying down the digital highway!

Chris Purcell
Director & Owner
I’m Chris and I originally started this business from my bedroom many years ago, while having a day job. Over time it grew, then I moved into an office, took on two staff members, of whom are still working with us today. We thrive on the customer service and the personal touch with it. It’s this core value we bring to our clients.
Outside of work, my son and I take part in go-karting championships and actively take part in many UK races across the country. Like Richard, I am into motorsport and cars, my all time hero is Ayrton Senna. Football is another passion as a Liverpool supporter the office banter can be high at times.
Richard Lockwood
Director & Owner
I am Richard a Director at Purcell Accountants. I have worked in accountancy for over 25 years in Corporate and general accountancy & taxation. I have been involved with the Company from October 2019 and became a Director in June 2020. I really enjoy being with Purcell’s for both the camaraderie and family atmosphere we bring to the team and to clients.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my two boys and the family. I have many interests, of which Motorsport both 4 and 2 wheels are a big part of it, from club motorbike racing to F1 and BSB. Along with travel, football – I am a Manchester United supporter and listening to music. I am also a petrolhead so I love anything to do with cars, car shows, car detailing and love my own collection.
